30. Glitchward

Luna stood at the prow of the land skiff shaking her head. The vessel was relatively small, one of the nimbler vessels used to ferry goods and passengers throughout Havenspire. It boasted a large mainsail and smaller jib and was a good deal fatter at the sides than its water-bound equivalent.

A deep hull was furnished with several small cabins and a few luxury berths with the bulk of the structure devoted to cargo storage. It hovered thirty feet or so above ground, kept aloft by a combination of magic and technical know-how, a blend of mechanical and ethereal potency mastered by the Engineer’s Guild.

Kane had wondered, as the group boarded the vessel, why the sails were even necessary given that magic was used to keep it aloft. Why not simply use magic to propel the boat forward?

Tusk had informed him that Havenspire had a long history when it came to land-boats like the skiff. The use of sails and the construction of vehicles which would make much more sense on water than air was testament to a prevailing nostalgia which had permeated Havenspire for a great many years. Practicality had little to do with it. The skiff, as with so much else in the Spire, existed in its current form because it fit with the larger fantasy ethos.

“Should have got yourself sent to one of those sci-fi simulators if you wanted a world without sails, bro,” Tusk had offered with a smirk.

An hour or so after heading out, Luna gathered the group together on deck. She looked back at the four initiates arrayed before her and frowned heavily.

“So, what have we got here?” she asked, then numbered them off one by one. “A bloodmancer, a rogue, a warrior”—she looked up into Naleth’s smiling face—“and whatever this is.”

She tapped at her sigil and all their own devices responded in unison. She twisted her fingers against the display and the individual screens hovering above each of their forearms joined together into a single table.

The statistics were more detailed in some ways than the trifold tally they’d seen from established guild members. Instead of the usual numbers listed beside key attributes, however, the display showed only an asterisk besides primary attributes for each of them.
